Excursion to Pompeii

Departure from the hotel for a guided tour of Pompeii.

Pompeii, excavated for about four fifths of its urban territory, is the most evocative and famous urban archaeological site in the world. The eruption of 79 AD buried the city under a blanket of ash and lapilli 6-7 meters thick. Most of the inhabitants, who fled their homes, found death on the coast. The few who remained, in the vain hope of saving themselves in the basements of their homes, died of asphyxiation: the casts of their bodies, obtained by pouring liquid plaster into the cavities of the bodies in the layer of ash, are a moving testimony to the tragedy. Walking through the Pompeii excavations is a unique experience, it is like taking a journey through time: you can breathe in the atmosphere of ancient life, the public one, and above all the private one. Walking through the excavations it is possible to visit the Forum, the Temple dedicated to Capitoline Jupiter and the Temple of Apollo. Along the Via dell’Abbondanza it is interesting to visit the shops of the time such as the brothel full of erotic paintings. Return to the hotel.
