Acciaroli is a seaside village that has always welcomed travellers and sailors. The writer Ernest Hemingway visited the village in the 1950s and was fascinated by it, and at the same time was inspired for what later became his greatest work, “The Old Man and the Sea”, thanks to his friendship with a local fisherman known as “u vecchio”. In the 1960s, Ancel Keys, a biologist and physiologist, moved to Pioppi and for over 40 years carefully studied the diet of the local population, reaching the conclusion that this diet brought health benefits. Today, the Mediterranean Diet is an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
